Does piercing your ear drum with a needle to relieve the pain from an ear infection hurt?

My co workers ear infection has been contant pain for about two weeks. The steroids have not relieved the pain, so they are suggesting piercing the ear drum to allow the fluid to drain and hopefully stop the pain. Has anyone had this done? Does it hurt? It’s sounds painful. Should she be concerned?
This was advised from an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Specialist.

It sounds painful, but it can probably be done medically with only a little discomfort

Are you sure the Dr. wasn’t talking about inserting tubes? That is a very common & easy procedure that is done in the doctors office & is not painful at all. If her Dr. is talking about stabbing it with a needle…I’d be concerned.

First confirm whether it is a pain due to infection or is it a nerve pain. If it is a nerve pain nothing except acupuncture can treat it! And you will unnecessarily damage the drum.
