I feel like I am constantly rubbing my wifes neck with no long term positive outcome. Sometimes she wants me to rub so hard that my thumbs feel like they are going to fall off. She gets angry and hurt when I can’t relieve her pain.

Suggest or schedule an appointment with a chiropractor and/or a massage therapist. Her discomfort is really not something you should continue to mess with when you are not trained, but helping her find relief is a very loving thing to do.
